The Twin Lakes of Burera And Lake Ruhondo In Rwanda

Lake Burera and Ruhondo are twin lakes found between Mountain Musanze and the Ugandan border. These lakes are fed by rivers in Uganda and are called twin lakes because of their closeness to each other. Lake Burera and Lake Ruhindo are all formed as a result of volcanicity due to a volcanic eruption which took place in the volcanic region of Rwanda making lava flow volcanoes blocking Nyabarongo River channel leading to formation of these twin lakes.

The shores of these twin lakes and Rugezi swamp give you a good photogenic experience and a walking safari for birding. The area is so good for bird watching as it gives you a chance to see all water birds around the lake and you will need a pair of binoculars to see bird species such as Rwenzori batis, Rwenzori apalis, handsome francolin among others.

Activities at Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo

Boat cruise and canoeing

A boat cruise on a ride on a canoe around Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo gives you a chance to explore Virunga Mountains and see almost 5 of them in volcanoes national park, different beautiful bird species such as red faced woodland warbler, Rwenzori turaco, strange weaver, dusky turtle dove, king fisher, brown necked parrot among others as well as terraced hills around the lakes. Visitors can see the nearby islands i.e. bushongo, munanira, bishosho and cuza. A boat cruise at any of these lakes goes for USD 20-30 per person valid for one day.

Birding

Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo are best for water birding and also nature walks around the lakes give you to see birds around the lake shores. Such birds include herons, kingfishers, cormorant, hamerkop and darters among others

Fishing

Tourist who visit twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo in Rwanda can engage in fishing activities on these lakes. The visitors are taught by the local people on how to use local fishing methods to catch fish and other visitors who want to partake in fishing activities may bring their fishing equipment along with them.

How to access the twin lakes in Rwanda

Visit who want to visit the twin lake in Rwanda can travel by road. Lake Ruhondo and Lake Burera can be accessed from volcanoes national park as these lakes are located about an hour from Sabinyo silverback lodge. Visitors travelling from Kigali will drive 99km to get to Lake Burera taking you about two and a half hours and those visitors from Mgahinga National Park Uganda can access Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo using Kyanika road in Kisoro district Uganda taking you about 1 hour to reach these lakes.
